The Calp Town Council has completed the July 8, 2026 The installation of 20 ecological moorings on Cantal Roig beach and in the Penyal cove, in the southern area of La Fossa beach, with the aim of allowing recreational boats to moor to these low-impact systems and thus avoid damage to the valuable protected seagrass meadows.
Calp protects its seabed with 20 new ecological moorings
The mayor of Calp, Ana Sala, and the councillor for the Environment and BeachesPere Moll, have visited the area to learn about this infrastructure and its operation. A total of 20 mooring systems: 10 facing Cantal Roig beach and 10 opposite the Penyal cove.
These areas are heavily frequented by recreational boats and are home to meadows of two protected seagrasses: the Cymodocea knotosa on Cantal Roig beach and the Posidonia oceanica in the Fossa. Both species are considered the two most important marine plants in the Mediterranean.
They are included in the Decree of the Consell for the conservation of seagrass meadows in the Valencian Community, which establishes that anchoring on these high-value meadows will only be possible using low-impact systems.
Environmental benefits and promotion of biodiversity
Mooring systems consist of a surface buoy for mooring vessels, which is attached to a structure fixed to the seabed by a base. This base not only ensures the system's stability but also acts as a biotope and ecological refuge, thus promoting increased biodiversity in the surrounding area.
Councillor Pere Moll pointed out that "these structures will replace the traditional moorings that caused serious damage to the protected seagrass beds, a key marine habitat for biodiversity and water quality. At the same time, these low-impact ecological systems will become genuine day care centers of fish and safe breeding areas."
European investment for sustainable tourism
The work was carried out by the company 'Sealand On Offshore Services SL' and was awarded for an amount of 42.000 Euros.
This project is part of Calp's 'Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan (PSTD)'. It falls within the framework of the 'Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan' and has been financed with 'Next Generation EU' funds, which underscores Calp's commitment to marine conservation and the energy.
