On November 6th, the Pedreguer Town Council and five other organizations from Cyprus, Croatia, Portugal, and Turkey formally launched the "EQUAL – Breaking the Glass Ceiling through Basketball" project via videoconference. This initiative, funded by the European Union and coordinated by the Alicante municipality, aims to promote gender equality through sport and encourage participation in basketball through five international seminars, several online meetings, sporting activities, and research projects. initial and continuous of coaches for this and other disciplines.
For this European project, the third related to sports in which Pedreguer is participating in 2024, the City Council has partnered with two associations sports organizations in Carvalhais (Portugal) and Malatya (Turkey), with which it has already collaborated on previous projects focused on gender equality. It has also partnered with a Cypriot research center, a Croatian NGO, and the academy of basketball created by the former captain of the Croatian national basketball team.
As a first activity, a delegation from Pedreguer will participate in a workshop in Cyprus to design a methodology for inclusion through sport. In 2026, to close the project, Pedreguer will host an international forum and a women's basketball competition with the participation of players from four countries.
Before its formal launch, the EQUAL project was presented last October to the General Directorate of Education, Culture and Sport of the European Commission, in a meeting in Brussels between Sergi Ferrus, mayor of Pedreguer, and the team of Sports of the European Commission. At this meeting, Ferrús invited the Commission to visit Pedreguer for the project's closing event.
