Juan Miguel Calabuig Tacha, a composer from Albaida, has been awarded the Audience Prize at the 9th Vila de Ondara Dolçaina and Piano Composition Competition for his work, Raval. The prize, worth 500 euros and awarded by the Valencian Federation of Dolçaina and Piano Players, was decided by popular vote among the attendees of the concert held last Saturday, October 18th, at the Casa de Ondara. By decision of the judging panel, the first prize, sponsored by Ondara City Council and with a prize of 1.250 euros, was not awarded this year.
Two finalist works
The finalist compositions were Raval and La Vall Blanca, both composed by Calabuig. The pieces were performed by Onda dolçainer Josep Alemany and Alicante pianist David González, who gave a performance that captivated the audience with its artistic quality and expressiveness.
The concert program was completed with the performance of winning works from previous editions, such as Valencianies (2019) and Roig Piripipip (2024), both by composer David Postiguillo, and a final encore that closed the evening with enthusiasm and ovations.
The event was attended by the mayor of Ondara, José Ramiro, and the Councillor for Culture, Rosa Ana Marí, who were in charge of presenting the award, accompanied by the attending public.
Rosa Ana Marí highlighted "the high quality of the works presented, which reflect the excellent creative and interpretive moment of the The music contemporary Valencian music." Furthermore, he emphasized the fundamental role of the performers: "Josep Alemany and David González delivered a memorable performance that moved the audience and brought to life compositions that fuse our roots with musical innovation."
The councilor also emphasized the importance of the competition as a space for cultural promotion, stating that "from the Department of Culture, we will continue to promote initiatives that give visibility to the talent of our composers and consolidate the dulzaina and piano as a unique combination for artistic expression."
