Los Moors and Christians The people of Pego have reason to celebrate. The Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism This event, so beloved by the people of Pego, has been declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest of the Valencian Community.
This statement comes after the request presented by the City Council to the General Directorate of Tourism last May, after months of joint work with the Central Board of Moors and Christians of Pego. A proposal that was also supported by all political groups in the plenary session.
Origin of the party
The MMiCC festival is the oldest in the Marina Alta region. It was born in 1967 with the creation of two filás, Zimbas and Marrakech. That first time they paraded through the streets of the town together with filás from Alcoi who were invited.
The first years they continued to invite the Alcoi groups to celebrate the entry and already in the 70s they began to create groups with residents of the town. They did it with the support of the City Council, which opted to promote and enhance the festival.
Currently there are 13 filás that parade in this festival that is celebrated on the last weekend of June (seven from the Moorish side and six from the Christian side).
In recent years, the Central Board and the festival participants have opted to introduce some new events, such as the informal parades on Thursday afternoon, the Diana (a traditional morning serenade), the Publicación (proclamation), and the change of date for the children's parade, which is now held on Sunday afternoon. However, the main events remain the Embajada (organized by the ambassador group on Friday afternoon) and the Entrada (parade) on Saturday afternoon, where homage is paid to the captain and where the festival truly shines thanks to the quality of the participating groups and the... The music which accompanies them; the latter being a very important part of the celebration.
