The Socialist councilor of Els Poblets, Eva Maria Candel Fontanet, has published an open letter announcing that she will not support the motion of no confidence filed against the current mayor, José Luís Mas, and apologizing for having initially signed it. The debate and vote on the motion will take place on September 10th in an extraordinary plenary session.
The motion, presented last Wednesday, August 27 The initiative, supported by three PSPV councilors, two PP councilors, and the councilor from the Els Poblets Residents Project (PRE), had six votes at the time. Compromís, with its four councilors, and the single vote from the Vivim Els Poblets party, were not enough to defeat the initiative. Now, with the withdrawal of the Socialist councilor, the vote cannot proceed.
Candel, who took office just a few weeks ago, acknowledges that his decision was hasty and the result of a lack of information. "Shortly after taking office, due to my inexperience and lack of full information about the political situation, I made a mistake and signed a motion of no confidence against the mayor," he explains in the statement.
The councilor asserts that she was unaware that the motion had not been consulted with the PSPV-PSOE leadership and that this initiative could lead to expulsion from the party. "When I made the decision on the motion of censure, I didn't know that Carolina Vives hadn't consulted the PSPV-PSOE and that because of this motion, we were going to be expelled from a party with which I identify and where I want to continue working," she adds.
In his letter, Candel emphasizes that he will act "with coherence and dignity" and states that he will not vote for a change of mayor, which, in his opinion, would go against the will of the citizens: "A large part of the people decided that José Luís Mas would be the candidate with the most votes, and Francisco Pérez, the one with the fewest. Therefore, with all conviction, I will not support the motion of censure and I will not vote for the new mayor they want to impose."
The councilor also took the opportunity to apologize to the residents of Els Poblets for the confusion caused: "The lack of information led me to a bad decision, and now I'm clear that the best thing to do is to rectify it."
He also sent a message of unity to his party colleagues and other progressive forces, demanding agreements and collaboration for the good of the municipality: "Let's strengthen ourselves, sit down, talk, and reach agreements with Compromís for the good of the people, leaving aside personal confrontations."
