The MEP of Commitment, Vicent Marzà, has denounced from Brussels the blockade of the Party and Vox in the European Parliament to prevent the urgent procedure from being used to process the petition submitted by the Salvem la Vall association against the PAI Medina Llíber.

The urban development project, classified as a macro-project, includes the construction of 488 chalets in Muntanya Llarga, within the municipality of Llíber, in the region of Valley of Pop, a municipality with fewer than a thousand inhabitants.

The petition warned of possible violations of European law

Marzà, a member of parliament for the Greens/European Free Alliance group, had requested the application of the urgent procedure and the appearance of the Salvem la Vall association before the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions. The aim was to allow the residents of Llíber to directly present their concerns regarding potential violations of European directives on the environment, water, and the climate emergency.

However, spokespeople for PP Vox decided to block this avenue, preventing the case from being treated as a priority.

Marzà denounces a "turning of the back" on the affected territory

After the decision was announced, Vicent Marzà was forceful in his criticism. "The PP and Vox have decided to turn their backs on Llíber and the Vall de Pop. They have prevented a citizen petition with a very serious environmental impact from being addressed with the urgency it deserves," he stated.

The MEP stressed that this is not a minor issue: "We are not talking about a minor matter, but about a disproportionate urban development project in a municipality of less than a thousand inhabitants and without water guarantees."

Compromís accuses [the government] of protecting a speculative urban development model

Marzà added that blocking the urgent procedure, in his view, constitutes a defense of a model contrary to EU regulations. "Blocking the urgent procedure is protecting a speculative model that clashes head-on with European law," he stated.

Despite the initial veto, the petition will now follow the standard procedure within the European Parliament. Compromís has reaffirmed its commitment to continue pushing the case until the EU institution hears from the affected citizens.

“They are not going to silence the people of Llíber,” warns Marzà

The MEP insisted that the delay will not stop the mobilization. political"Although the PP and Vox have delayed the process, they will not silence the people of Llíber. We will demand that the European Parliament listen to those who defend their territory and their future," he stressed.

Gerard Fullana, the Compromís regional deputy for the Marina Alta, echoed this sentiment, stating that the refusal to address the issue urgently demonstrates a lack of respect for the region's residents. "While the machinery is already working on the mountain, the PP and Vox parties prefer to look the other way," Fullana denounced.

Warning about irreversible environmental impact

Fullana has warned of the project's consequences and the delay in its institutional review. "Denying the urgency is ignoring an irreversible environmental impact and abandoning the Marina Alta region," she stated.

The regional deputy concluded by assuring that his initial and continuous Compromís will continue to support the citizens' platform and the affected municipalities. "From Compromís, we will continue to support Salvem la Vall and the affected municipalities to stop a PAI (Integrated Action Plan) that mortgages the environmental, social, and economic future of Vall de Pop," he concluded.
